The motivation wave

Motivation comes and goes.
If today you feel excited, great.
If you do not, that is completely normal.

The problem begins when you believe you can act only when that excitement is present.
Motivation is unstable. It goes up and down. It changes shape.

Relying on it to sustain long-term habits almost always ends in frustration.

What sustains a behavior is not the desire to do it.
It is when the action is simple enough to happen even on low-energy days.

There is an important point where three things meet: motivation, ability, and a clear cue.
When motivation is low, the task needs to be very easy to still happen.

Most people design habits for good days.
For when everything is flowing, when the mood helps, when there is extra energy.

But it is on the days without excitement that the habit needs to fit.

The secret is not to try to feel more motivated.
It is to design the habit so it needs less motivation.

The smaller the action, the more resistant it becomes to tiredness, bad mood, and stress.
When the effort is small, you do not have to negotiate with yourself. You simply do it.

And when a habit does not happen, it is almost never a lack of inner strength.
Most of the time, there is too much demand.

If your energy is low today, reduce the size of the habit.
Do not reduce the frequency.

Showing up, even with a little, keeps the system alive.
That is what allows the habit to keep existing, even on the days when the motivation wave is far away.
